A UTI is an infection which affects the inner lining of the urinary tract. It is a bacterial infection with 90% of cases attributable to Escherichia coli. When infected, the tissues in the urinary tract become inflamed and swollen. This causes a hindrance in the normal flow, thus causing pain while passing urine.

Adherence of the pathogens to the urinary tract wall is the first step in the pathogenesis of UTI. E.coli has hair like structures called fimbriae with which it attaches itself to the wall of the urinary tract and causes infection.

Cranberries have been carefully evaluated for their therapeutic effect in a host of different diseases. Cranberry contains proanthocyanidins (PACs) which is a phytochemical unique to the Vaccinium family, under which cranberries are classified. They act as a natural defense mechanism against microbes by preventing the bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract wall. Cranberry also decreases the pH in the bladder making it acidic and unfavourable for bacterial growth.

D-Mannose is a simple sugar found in fruits like cranberries ,peaches etc .Mannose rich foods have antiviral,antibacterial and anti-infalmmatory properties. D-Mannose helps to remove infection causing bacteria from the urinary tract.
